Partner program for extenders

Matt Goyer just posted some highlights from the WinHEC keynote, and I’m most interested in the partner program for extenders that was announced.

We’ve been working with several companies to have products available to for launch, and today we’re announcing the Media Center Extender Partner Program. What that program will do is, it will allow companies to have access to design information, documentation, and the necessary components to embed Extender functionality into devices like TVs, DVD players, set-top boxes, and digital media adapters.

I’m really hoping that this opens up the doors some more.  Of course the real question is how open will this design information be?  I would love it if someone could take the MCX designs and create a software extender that could be used on a Windows box or even a Linux box.  Now *that* would be cool.  Here’s hoping that it’s really available to the masses and not a “partner program” like the original MCE was a “partner program” where you only need apply if your name starts with “H” and ends with “P”.
