Portable Media Centers on sale now in Canada

Portable Media Center devices have been on the market for awhile, but I’ve not yet been able to find them for sale at any major Canadian retailer.  I checked just a few days ago and couldn’t find it anywhere.

Lo and behold, this weekend’s Best Buy flyer and Future Shop flyer have 2-page spreads dedicated to the entire Media Center lineup.  I’m happy to see the push, and hoping that they’ve also given an education to their employees – I’ve heard horror stories about the US salespeople and their knowledge of MCE related equipment.

The Creative Zen is hitting the Canadian market at a price of $749 CAD at both Future Shop and Best Buy (same parent, so basically the same store).  It’s a bit pricey given the high value of the Canadian dollar – you can get one from Amazon in the US for $472 which at the current exchange rate is $565 CAD.

For those who don’t already know, the Portable Media Center platform is a digital media player that does both music and video.  It will work without an XP Media Center Edition PC, but when you plug it all in together there’s alot of promise (take your recorded TV with you, for example).

Coincidentally, I just today received and evaluation unit from Microsoft so that I’ll be able to give it a quick rundown.  I plan to try it out as part of my daily routine over the next few weeks – 50 minutes a day on the GO Train and a few long flights.  I have high expectations, let’s see how they turn out!  If you have any specific requests for things you’d like me to test out, just post them in the feedback section below.
